But first - A Word About The Photographer
B. D. Colen began his life in photography at the age of 16, working without pay for The Westport Town Crier, a weekly newspaper in Fairfield County, Conn. During a summer of photo assignments that included everything from owners of lost dogs to local softball games, Colen was assigned to cover the historic March On Washington For Jobs and Freedom. Some time between that summer and 1970, Colen's primary focus switched from photography to writing, and for 23 years he was a reporter and editor, first at The Washington Post, and then at Newsday, where he covered medicine and health care and shared a Pulitzer Prize in 1984. Along the way he wrote 10 books on medically related subjects, and continued to shoot.
About six years ago, B. D. Colen refocused on photography. He launched A Day In Our Life, and in addition to doing commissioned documentary photography for families, he has done commercial and editorial work for clients including Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Novo Nordisk, Amgen, Prizer Inc. and Simon and Schuster. Colen teaches a course at MIT called Documentary Photography and Photojournalism: Still Images of A World In Motion, and teaches a course entitled A Day In Our Life at the Maine Photographic Workshops. Colen is a member of the "Olympus Visionaries" group, whose digital work is supported in part by Olympus America. His digital shooting is done with an Olympus E-1 digital single lens reflex camera, and he does the bulk of his film work with Leica M rangefinder cameras, and Nikons SLRs.
Here is an eclectic assortment of some of what are currently his favorites images, taken between 1968 and 2004.
